Vice Chairman Schweikert on National Debt Surpassing $35 Trillion
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Joint Economic Committee Vice Chairman David Schweikert released the following statement after the total gross national debt of the United States eclipsed $35 trillion for the first time – a grim milestone for the nation. According to Vice Chairman Schweikert’s Daily Debt Monitor, the federal government has borrowed $1.83 trillion so far this fiscal year, which amounts to an increase of more than $6 billion each day and over $70,000 every second.
“It should come as no surprise that our government has accumulated $35 trillion in total national debt. Each day the Biden-Harris administration refuses to cure its insatiable spending addiction is another $6 billion loaded onto the backs of America’s working families. Our children and grandchildren deserve a fighting chance to grow up in a prosperous society, but unfortunately President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Congressional Democrats have shown no signs of slowing their reckless spending spree. I strongly urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to take their fiscal responsibility seriously and work together to change our economic trajectory before it’s too late,” said Vice Chairman Schweikert.
