Bennett: "Job Growth is Strong Nationwide"

Washington, DC – Senator Robert F. Bennett, Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, today issued the following statement in reaction to this morning’s Department of Labor announcement of state by state job creation in April 2004. The report showed that:

• Non-farm payroll employment increased in 45 states in April.

• Over the past year, employment has increased in 44 states.

• Over the past year, the unemployment rate has fallen in 47 states.

“This job growth is reflective of the outstanding expansion reported across the country. More than 600,000 jobs have been created nationwide in the last two months and 1.1 million jobs since last August. Manufacturing employment has also added 37,000 jobs across the U.S., reversing a trend of nearly four years of declines. While new jobs are emerging, unemployment is shrinking. This month the unemployment rate fell to 5.6%, well below its peak of 6.3% last June.

“As the economy recovers, Americans are in a better position to provide for their families, and American businesses can continue to grow and compete successfully in the global market.”
