A high proportion of our nation’s refining capacity lies near the potential path of Hurricane Rita, much of which has been shuttered for the duration of the storm. According to the American Petroleum Institute there are 21 refineries, making up 27.5 percent of the domestic refining capacity, between Lake Charles, Louisiana and Corpus Christi, Texas. It generally takes several days to re-start refineries.
