BLS Reports Payroll Jobs Increased by 80,000 in October

Payroll Employment grew by a seasonally adjusted 80,000 jobs in the month of October. September job growth was revised up to 158,000 from a previously reported 103,000. Job growth in August was revised up to 104,000 from a previously reported 57,000.

Private sector payroll employment increased by 104,00 jobs in October after rising by 191,000 in September. Total government jobs fell by 24,000 in October with state and local governments falling 22,000 jobs and the federal government losing 2,000 jobs. Local government educational services jobs increased by 1,200 during the month.

Over the past twelve months, total nonfarm payroll employment has increased by 1.501 million or 1.15%. Over the same period, private sector payroll rose by 1.824 million or 1.69%, while the total government sector declined by 323,000 million or 1.45%.

On a sector-by-sector basis, the professional and business services sector turned in the best performance adding 35,000 jobs during the month, while construction registered the worst performance in the private sector losing 20,000 jobs.
