Weekly Economic Update: November 14 – November 18, 2016

Productivity growth is a key ingredient for raising living standards because it leads to higher incomes.  The chart shows the annual percentage increase in how much workers can produce per hour worked.  Since 2008 it has averaged only 1.2%, compared to its 1960-2007 average of 2.2%.

Put another way, at 2.2% it would take about 31.5 years for per capita incomes to double; at a rate of 1.2% it will take about 58 years.
