JEC Establishes Committee Leadership for the 119th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last week, the Joint Economic Committee concluded its committee organizational vote to adopt the committee’s leadership for the 119th Congress. Chairman David Schweikert (R-AZ-01) and Vice Chairman Eric Schmitt (R-MO) formally ratified the committee’s membership, which consists of 12 Republicans and 8 Democrats, each evenly divided between the House and Senate chambers.

Chairman David Schweikert

I’m honored to serve as the Joint Economic Committee Chairman while the country navigates pressing economic challenges. The committee will underscore the destructive trajectory of increasing debt, propose novel solutions to promote growth and decrease deficits, and explore the role technological innovation and disruption can play in achieving American prosperity. Above all, the committee will undertake its mission with a steadfast commitment to intellectual honesty; math is neither Democratic nor Republican—it’s math.”

Vice Chairman Eric Schmitt

“As our nation embarks on a new economic future, I am honored to serve as the Vice Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee in the 119th Congress. This committee has a tremendous opportunity to turn around the devastating path our nation’s economy has been on for the last four years. From run-away spending, to devastating levels of inflation, I am confident the U.S. Joint Economic Committee can work together to improve the economic future of the American people. I look forward to working with Chairman Schweikert, Ranking Member Hassan, and my colleagues to bring this much needed change for everyday Americans.”

The Joint Economic Committee (JEC) is a bicameral committee of the U.S. Congress, established under Sec. 5(a) of Public Law 304, 79th Congress. Leadership alternates between the House and Senate each Congress. The chamber in control designates a majority-party member as Chair, while the other chamber’s majority party appoints a Vice Chair. If the same party holds the majority in both chambers, a Ranking Member position is created for the minority party in the non-controlling chamber.

For the 119th Congress, the JEC is controlled by the House of Representatives. As the Chairman and Vice Chairman are both Republicans, the Ranking Member position is held by a Senate Democrat.

Committee members were appointed to the JEC by the House of Representatives on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 and by the Senate on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
