U. S. Congressman Pat Tiberi (R-OH), chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the employment report for January 2017 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

“We finally have a monthly job gain above 200,000. However, too many people are left behind and remain outside the workforce as Obama-era rules and regulations stifle business growth and job creation. While the labor force participation rate ticked up slightly due to demographic changes, it still remains stubbornly near decades-low levels.

“Americans don’t have to accept lackluster job creation and economic growth. The new administration and the new Congress are committed to unleashing America’s job-creating potential by repealing overbearing, burdensome regulations and overhauling our anti-growth tax code. Just this week, the House took steps to block five costly, job-killing Obama regulations. This is just the beginning as we work to increase opportunity for all Americans.”

Note: Today’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the U.S. economy added 227,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in January and the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 4.8 percent. November and December job gains were revised to a net loss of 39,000 jobs. The labor force participation rate was 62.9 percent.
