Highlights of the report:
Non-farm payroll employment increased by 88,000 new jobs in April, following an increase of 177,000 in March.  
     April marks the 44th consecutive month with payroll job gains. 
      Close to 7.9 million new payroll jobs have been created in that period.
Over the year ending in April, payroll employment grew by close to 1.9 million.
The unemployment rate edged up to 4.5% in April, from 4.4% in March.
The unemployment rate has ranged from 4.4% to 4.6% since last September.
The unemployment rate remains well below the recent peak of 6.3% in June 2003.

Payrolls up 88,000 in April, Unemployment at 4.5%

April Employment and Unemployment:  The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report today on employment and unemployment for April (pdf summary available at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf).

Highlights of the report:
Non-farm payroll employment increased by 88,000 new jobs in April, following an increase of 177,000 in March.  
     April marks the 44th consecutive month with payroll job gains. 
      Close to 7.9 million new payroll jobs have been created in that period.
Over the year ending in April, payroll employment grew by close to 1.9 million.
The unemployment rate edged up to 4.5% in April, from 4.4% in March.
The unemployment rate has ranged from 4.4% to 4.6% since last September.
The unemployment rate remains well below the recent peak of 6.3% in June 2003.
