WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Joint Economic Committee Democrats released an explainer today that breaks down the devastating impact Graham-Cassidy would have on health care in the United States. The current Republican health care plan is even worse than a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act—it slashes Medicaid, allows insurers to discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions, increases costs of insurance for working Americans, and according to CBO would strip comprehensive coverage from millions of people
The explainer document analyzes the impact Graham-Cassidy would have on Medicaid, the effect on the individual market, as well as coverage losses. Here are some of the key takeaways from the explainer:
- According to health care experts and based on prior CBO estimates, in 2027 at least 32 million people will lose their care under Graham-Cassidy, including 19 million on Medicaid.
- An additional 6.4 million people could lose their Medicaid coverage due to Graham-Cassidy’s arbitrary per-capita caps by 2027.
- Gutting Medicaid expansion is a restriction of state flexibility: it forces states to give people care with fewer services at higher costs, asking them to do more with less.
- In 2027, 23 million people will lose coverage in the individual market. Those left would have their premium tax credits pulled out from under them and would see their premiums double.
- Graham-Cassidy will affect everyone, even those with coverage through their employer, by increasing health care costs and allowing insurers to discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions again.
