The Consequences of the GOP Healthcare Plan in Your State: New State-by-State Analysis by the Joint Economic Committee Democrats

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Joint Economic Committee Democrats announced the release of a new state-by-state analysis outlining the disastrous impact the GOP healthcare plan will have on Americans across the country. For each state, the analysis shows anticipated increases in premiums, the number of people losing private-coverage, and the increased cost of uncompensated care to hospitals.

The states with the highest increases in uninsured Americans in 2018 include California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Michigan. The states with the highest increases in premium costs include Alaska, North Carolina, Arizona, Oklahoma, Alabama, Vermont, Wyoming, New York, South Dakota and Montana.

The economists found net premiums will increase for older, lower-income Americans by nine times under the Republican health care plan. If successful, the Republican plan would funnel money to the rich, providing them with an additional average of $207,390 a year in after tax income while low income families will lose $205 dollars a year.  Put another way, this is the equivalent of 960 low-come families giving up 2 months-worth of electricity bills to pay for one wealthy family’s club fee at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

“By next year, 14 million will be uninsured totaling 52 million by 2026,” said Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee. “The Republican plan would mean a restaurant worker pays more for their health care so that a hedge fund manager can get a six figure tax break. That’s unconscionable. Having an economy that works for all means making sure Americans get the affordable health care they deserve.”
