Extreme Republican Budget Plans Would Gut Government Programs and Extend Tax Cuts for Rich

Washington, D.C.—Recent Republican budget plans would force drastic cuts to vital federal programs, as detailed in a report released today by the Joint Economic Committee Democrats.

Extending the 2017 GOP tax scam would add $4.6 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. Republicans’ own plans to cover the trillions they want to spend on tax cuts would force the government to eliminate all spending for:

  • Air traffic controllers to keep travelers safe
  • Inspections that ensure meat or baby formula is safe to consume
  • FEMA grants that support local fire departments
  • Federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI, DEA, and Secret Service
  • Medicaid coverage for 48 million elderly, disabled, and low-income adults
  • National Student Lunch Program for 30 million children

“Republicans’ extreme proposals are dangerous for America. While Democrats are fighting to invest in families, Republicans would rather protect their billionaire friends at the expense of everyone else,” said Senator Martin Heinrich. “Kicking 42 million kids off of health insurance, gutting federal investments in public safety, denying veterans hospital care, and getting rid of SNAP benefits that help people afford groceries is unconscionable. Americans deserve better.”
