Each month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) releases national and state-level data on U.S. employment, which provide useful information about the state of the labor market and progress toward building a better America. To highlight key trends in the monthly data, the Joint Economic Committee compiles state-by-state fact sheets for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The most recent state-level data, which cover the month of April, were released on May 19, 2023. The latest national data were released on May 5, 2023.
• The U.S. economy added 253,000 jobs in April, and the United States has seen 27 consecutive months of job growth under President Biden.
• Since President Biden came into office, the United States has added 12.7 million jobs, and at 3.4%, the unemployment remains near 50-year lows.
• In April, the unemployment rate was a record-low 4.7% for Black workers, 4.4% for Hispanic workers, 3.1% for white workers, 2.8% for Asian workers, and 7.5% (not seasonally adjusted) for American Indian and Alaska Native workers.
