The Hill - Dems hammer Trump for 'broken promises' in first 100 days

Democrats are hammering President Trump ahead of his administration's 100-day mark, saying he has repeatedly broken his campaign promises.

Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee — led by ranking member Sen. Martin Heinrich (N.M.) — will release two reports Thursday knocking Trump over his "broken promises" to rural communities and working-class families.

The Democrats argue Trump has hurt families by undermining innovation, rolling back worker protections and making it harder to save for retirement.

"By tilting the playing field further towards corporate interests, President Trump is stacking the deck against America's working families," says the report, a copy of which was obtained in advance by The Hill.

It adds that "the increased opportunities for corruption under the Trump administration ... could undermine economic growth."

A series of reports have said the administration is sidestepping its own ethics rules and weakening Obama-era rules on former lobbyists joining the administration.

The committee's separate report on rural communities warns that Trump's proposed budget would make deep cuts to key programs and departments, including the Department of Agriculture.

"From his budget that cuts services rural communities rely on to TrumpCare ... President Trump has already broken faith with rural voters who have trusted him to improve their livelihoods and secure a more stable future," the report says.

It says the fact that Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, who was confirmed by the Senate this week, was the "last announced secretary suggests that rural areas are not a priority for President Trump."

The report adds that Trump is negatively impacting rural communities by undercutting rural services, healthcare, economic opportunities and "the well-being of public lands."

The two reports come as congressional Democrats step up their criticism of Trump leading up to his 100th day in office on Saturday.

Democrats are holding a daily press conference as part of a "countdown" to Saturday highlighting different "broken promises" from the Trump administration.

House and Senate Democrats are expected to hold a press conference later Thursday on Trump's campaign pledge to "drain the swamp" and argue that the president has "broken that promise time and time again."

They held press conferences earlier this week on Trump's "broken promise" on healthcare and keeping jobs in the U.S.
