Heinrich Statement on April Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement on the April jobs report:

“Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its jobs report on hiring in April, showing over 16 million private sector jobs were created during the past 86 months. These numbers continue to indicate the success of a growing economy inherited by President Trump. Instead of building off of this growth handed to him by his predecessor, we have yet to see any clear plan on creating jobs and raising wages from the President or Congressional Republicans. In fact, this week, Republicans chose to set the country back by voting to kick millions off their health care plans and even took an obscure step to make it harder for Americans to save for retirement.

“This agenda will not move our economy forward or secure a stronger future for hard-working families. I urge Republicans to set their partisan actions aside, and join together with Democrats to build on the progress we made during the last eight years and ensure that all American families have a chance at getting ahead.”

Joint Economic Committee Democratic staff are comparing job growth each month to the average in the late 1990s (a boom time in the economy), but also to the best individual month each series has ever seen. Click here to follow our job tracker.
