House GOP Plan Raises Taxes on Working Families

President Trump and House Republicans continue to claim that their tax plan will help the middle class. Yet, the bill released by House Republicans will increase taxes for millions of working families, rising from 8 million households in 2019 to 24 million in 2027.

If enacted, the House Republican tax proposal would saddle 24 million households that earn up to $100,000 with a tax increase. Thirteen million households would face a tax hike of $500 or more. Last year, 44 percent of adults reported that they would be either unable to afford an unexpected expense of $400 or would have to sell their possessions or borrow money to make ends meet. A tax increase above that would be devastating for cash-strapped families.

Raising taxes on working Americans while giving tax cuts to the wealthiest does not strengthen our economy. In New Mexico, $500 could pay for over six months of electric bills. In Ohio, it could cover over 200 gallons of gas.
