Maloney Statement on Jobs Report

Economy adds 280,000 nonfarm jobs in May

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.), Ranking Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), Friday released the following statement about the announcement by the Department of Labor that the economy added 280,000 nonfarm jobs in May, and the unemployment rate remained essentially the same at 5.5 percent. May marked the 63rd consecutive month of private-sector job growth, the longest streak on record.

This is another solid jobs report. The longest streak of monthly private sector job growth continued, labor force participation expanded and wages grew. Clearly the economy has shown consistent strength coming out of the worst recession since the 1930s, but there’s plenty of room for additional growth, particularly for those at the bottom of the economic ladder.

“Congress should focus its attention on a middle-class agenda that includes job creation and higher wages, better infrastructure and, through renewing the charter of the Export-Import Bank, which new markets to U.S. products. That’s the best strategy for creating conditions that will allow Americans to thrive.”
