    JEC Chair Maloney Statement on June Jobs Report

    Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee released the following statement after the U.S. economy shed 467,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate rose to 9.5 percent:

    "The worst monthly job losses are likely behind us, but the labor market clearly remains weak. It will be a long road to recovery, but the stimulus investments getting underway across the country will create jobs and stem losses."

    Predatory Lending and Reverse Redlining: Are Low-income, Minority and Senior Borrowers Targets for Higher Cost Loans?

    Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) convened a hearing to investigate the extent to which minority borrowers and senior citizens have been targeted to receive higher cost loans. The hearing entitled, “Predatory Lending and Reverse Redlining: Are Low-income, Minority and Senior Borrowers Targets for Higher Cost Loans?” was held on Thursday, June 25th 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in room 2118 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The JEC examined the prevalence of “reverse redlining” and whether further federal action to prevent discriminatory lending is needed. Additionally, the committee explored how the newly proposed Consumer Financial Product Safety Agency could protect against manipulative lending in the future.

    TARP Accountability and Oversight: Measuring the Strength of Financial Institutions

    Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) will convene a hearing to examine the Congressional Oversight Panel’s (COP) June report to Congress, providing the panel’s assessment of the stress tests and the implications the tests have for the ongoing mission of TARP and the institutions using its resources. COP Chair Elizabeth Warren will testify at the hearing entitled, “TARP Accountability and Oversight: Measuring the Strength of Financial Institutions” on Tuesday June 9, 2009 at 10:00 am in room 210 of the Cannon House Office Building. Chairwoman Warren will testify about the government stress test evaluations of financial institutions, the impact of the results on restoring market confidence, and the panel’s current oversight activities as they relate to the TARP program.

    The Employment Situation: May 2009

    Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) will hold a hearing on the newly released employment figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The hearing entitled, “The Employment Situation: May 2009” will take place on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 9:30 am in Dirksen Room 106. BLS commissioner Keith Hall will testify to recent developments in the labor market, as the JEC continues a series of hearings examining the causes and ongoing effects of the financial crisis and the economic downturn.
